"Russia doesn't play by the rules, BWAAAAAH!"

Or so says conservatives. I saw a link to an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal titled "How the West Can Stand Up to Russia". I thought it would be hilariously stupid and it didn't dissapoint. It's written by two corporate welfare recipients from the American Enterprise Institute (conservatives get paid to be stupid, it's like MTV's Jackass, but for intellectuals). Before advocating for the shipment of military material to Georgia in the hopes of recreating 1980s Afghanistan, they complain of Russia not follwing the rules.
In a speech before the Munich Conference on Security Policy in February last year, Mr. Putin made it clear that Russia would no longer accept the rules of the international road as set by the democratic West. It was an in-your-face challenge to the U.S. and Europe, and we blinked.

Uh, sorry, but which international law gave permission to the US to invade Iraq? Bush's "you're either with us or you're with the terrorists" was even more hostile than Putin's middle-finger. It's the same dumbasses who though a war in the Middle-East was a good idea who are now creaming their panties at the thought of a new cold war. That's what they always wanted anyway, ever since the Berlin Wall fell. They tried the War on Terror for a while, but it wasn't the same. Fighting religious conservatives when you're one yourself gets confusing after a while.

America didn't do anything wrong in this story. It's just the few dumbasses getting a boner for Cold War II.

Dumbasses indeed, even dumber is Khalilzad's comment on the days of invasion and overthrow being gone. Like adding the words "in Europe" makes it any less hypocritical. Bullshit.

This is our former Ambassador to Iraq talking shit about how other countries can't do the same shit we do. I guess it's nothing new. The same shit seems to have been applied to torture and other war crimes, why not take it a step further?

And all we need is another Cold War. Just so the neocons can compare phantom phalli with Putin... great.

If you did end up with a new Cold War I honestly think the USA would be the ones to suffer. Given their current international standing (even Britain is swinging its support away from them) it would be difficult to establish connections with other countries and build another NATO to stand against "Red influence".

Totally agreed jezebel. That's the very reason I'm pissed off. As justifiable as supporting Georgia might be, we can't afford to elevate our standing on Russia's shit list. I'm not a fan of the whole "international police" thing, but being in a recession just makes it that much more fucked up.

Daniel, there's nothing justifiable about supporting Georgia. Their presidnet was the one who ordered the attack on South Ossetia, and the Russian Federation's peacekeepers there. He ordered the attack on his own people, just like Winston Churchill and Saddam Hussein did.

I would like to see their reaction when the Chinese government sent troops to Xinjiang and Tibet. But I am not surprised by that reaction. People tend to have a selective memory. Very convenient for a potentially embarassing situation.

Well, OTOH it would be hard for Russia too given its reputation - like, killing most Chechens and turning Tbilissi into more or less a smoking crater? The real scary part about it is that Putin got MORE popular for doing that, rather than less.

There's not gonna be a new Cold War anyway. Europe needs Russia's oil and Russia needs to sell that oil to Europe. These neo-cons might bitch all they want, not gonna happen.

My mistake anders, I hadn't properly informed myself, but I wouldn't support involvement in this conflict either way. The fact that Georgia fired the first shot in this, just makes the U.S. look that much worse for supplying aid to them.

This just plays into the neo-con agenda, Sirk. Fear = Consumption, any chance they get to prey on the fears of the uninformed is another chance they have to cause mindless comsumption. This kind of abusive opportunism works well with "Reaganomics".
